My interpretation of 25 in 25 - a list of 25 things to accomplish this year. I did one for 2024, which was actually motivational for me and fun to keep track of. 2019 Year in Review

As usual I fell behind on projects I wanted to accomplish this year, but that’s okay. There’s always next year. I did manage to tick a few things off my list, and I did pick up a reading habit again (even if the “reading” mostly consisted of audio books).

Here are a few of the things that happened in 2019, in no particular order:

1. Lots of letters received but not as many sent. I need to improve on that!

2. I went to the Downton Abbey Exhibit in Boston..
3. More genealogy and DNA cousin discoveries.
4. Read a fair amount of books but did not meet my Goodreads challenge goal of 50 books.
5. Reached out to some relatives and offered them an extra (free!) DNA kit and either never heard back or was told "no, thank you"
6. Funeral for my Uncle Manny who passed away 30 Sep 2018)
7. Took some courses online through Future Learn and managed to finish some but not all
8. Did not finish this year's NaNoWriMo effort
9. Tried NYC Midnight’s MicroFiction Challenge and received really good feedback
10. Submitted flash fiction to Alone in a Room with Invisible People's Halloween Podcast and was thrilled to have it read on the podcast! You can listen to my story, "Once in a Blue Moon," here on the Apple Podcast or Podbean at 19:14.
11. Saw my first Broadway play, Betrayal, in November, starring Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton, and Charlie Cox, with special appearance by Eddie Arnold.
12.Took a bus to NYC for the first time
13. Rode the NYC subway by myself for the first time
14. Had lunch with Sharifa in NYC
15. Walk for Hunger in May
16. Took my niece to Harvard Square for the first time
17. Real ID adventures
18. Used Amtrak rewards points toward a free ticket (woo!)
19. Spent too much money
20. Saw some new shows on Netflix
21. Finally got to see the Avengers movies (;ast one / last two)
22. Played Monument Valley 1 and 2; also, Wizards United
23. Lost one pound (woo!)
24. Bean was concussed the weekend before her birthday.
25. Sick for the holidays and end of the year

2018 Review

2018 was eventful but thankfully not as eventful as previous years. Here are some of the things that happened in 2018, mostly in no particular order.

1. Made a new 101 in 1001 and started up this blog again.
2. Downton Abbey movie was announced!
3. Lots of letters sent and received!
4. More genealogy and DNA cousin discoveries
5. Read some books (I rediscovered audio books and podcast university lectures), saw some movies (finally saw ThorRagnarok), but didn't get much walking in (mostly due to the very hot summer we had)
6. In April Sharifa & Irvin visited Boston, and we got to hang out
7. Took my niece to L.A. Burdick for hot chocolate
8. Walk for Hunger in May
9. Letters Live, NYC in May
10. Helped with researching props for a NY festival play
11. Victory Gardens, Boston with my sis and dad (June)
12. June 10 - Sagres at Fan Pier, Boston, and the Boston Portuguese Festival on City Hall Plaza
13. The Wizard School Scavenger Hunt at the MFA (Watson Adventures, Aug.)
14. Mid Aug.-Sep. 30 was spent worrying about my Uncle Manny. It was a deja vu feeling in many ways from the year before when Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017, and we had no word as to how he was until Oct. 7 when an internet angel actually went to his house (all I had was a PO Box and a vague description of where he lived) to check on him. Cells weren't working in his area so she snapped a photo and messaged it to me on Facebook once she was back in an area with reception. We were able to reach him by phone a week later and were overjoyed to hear his voice, but seeing his photo on Oct. 7 and being the receiver of such kindness from a total stranger had my mom and me crying happy tears. Fast forward to 2018 when he was supposed to visit us but had returned home early and fell ill. By all accounts he was ill when he was visiting other family, but he was worse when he returned to P.R. Weeks followed where the news of his health yo-yo'd between improvement and worsening. We got the call on Sep. 30 that he had passed away.
15. Finally attended the Boston Book Festival (Oct. 13)
16. November saw a get together with friends from high school, and it was great to catch up!
17. NaNoWriMo fail
18. Tried pork pot pie and a piece of English country manor farm cheese (it was green and had sage in it), although not at the same time

101 in 1001: List Five

from Day Zero Project (aka "101 in 1001 Days")

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days? Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organizing and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

My 2011 Review - The Good, The Awesome, The Bad, The Ugly

In no particular order, here are some of 2011's highlights:

* major face failure in January; one year later, and I’m still haunted by the mystery person
* I took a chance. Twice. Both times it paid off in the short run but not the long run. I don’t regret taking either chance at all. :)
* I sold a lot (for me) on etsy. :) Unfortunately I didn’t make enough new items to sell. All my crafting/creating plans seemed doomed to remain .. unfinished.
* Walk for Hunger! :)
* reconnected with old friends :)
* made a new friend :)
* met new people :)
* attended a film screening for P7D :)
* said goodbye to NHS
* went hiking on Blue Hills :)
* realized I was falling into the old oubliette/limbo/holding patterns and tried unsuccessfully to break the patterns before it was too late
* spent too much time online
* my writing suffered; it was basically nonexistent for 2011
* got my copy of P7D! :)
* gave up coffee for awhile :) but drank too much coffee for the remainder of the year
* got into a Facebook habit in February because I had a reason to play on there
* long walks in the nice weather :)
* went on an actual date (go me!) :)
* failed NaNoWriMo
* enjoyed the beautiful weather as much as possible :)
* realized early on that my crush wasn’t crushing on me after all and that he was just being nice because he’s a nice person; of course, it didn’t make the realization any easier and so I lived in hope & denial for a while; “Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love.” (Charlie Brown)
* saw a movie at Legacy Place (holy cow! that place is big!)
* was disappointed to discover I wasn’t as high on someone’s friend list as I thought I had been and spent too much time trying to figure out if I was a friend, a sometimes friend or just an acquaintance
* was amazed to meet someone who was actually excited to spend time with me :)
* was called cute (yay!) :)
* Duck Tour! :)
* visited with family, including a visit with my Dad :)
* Found two pairs of pants that actually fit! :)
* Joined PostCrossing :)
* Got some pen pals! :)
* won a gift basket :)
* had a visit from Missy :)
* NYC! :)
* was beyond tired (exhausted!) in the beginning of the year and in the end of the year
* had lasagna (December) :)
* too many strange, random comments made to me than I can recall
* 101 in 1001 failure! but I made a new list so it’s all good
* cancer in the family .. again :(
* R.I.P. Ray LaPierre - December 23, 2011 - sad Christmas :(

I think that was pretty much it.

Lousy Weather and Other Things

Yesterday was snowy. I left work an hour early. Today was "mixed" (snow early morning followed by icy rain the rest of the morning), and the office was closed. I went into work to reschedule the afternoon, and the sidewalk on the main street was ice. Tomorrow will not be much fun getting to work, but I'm inside, warm and dry, today. That's all that matters at the moment.

I'm still obsessing about my face failure a few weeks back, but it's less about solving the mystery now and more about .. I need to just move on. One way to move on, with my life in general .. I'm actually considering those online dating services. The worse that can happen is I get a bit of a personal life. I really can't stop thinking about the fact that the random person might have been my recent crush, and I totally blanked on him. I haven't seen him (that I know of!) in over a month or more, and T. is probably right. He's not interested in me - never has been; he's just friendly. If by some chance he had stopped by the office, he will undoubtedly think I'm a jerk for not recognizing him, and then he'll no longer be friendly when I see him. Or he won't be bothered by it at all. Friendly or not, I must stop wasting time wondering and trying to bump into him since it's getting me nowhere, stuck in limbo. It's part of the reason my brain had shut down when the mystery person stepped in.

Luckily, a very exciting project has come my way, and I'll be focused on helping Sharifa during P7d's post-production final stretch. This opportunity is an even better way to refocus myself and move on. :D The tricky part will not be jumping ahead and simply sticking to each task as it's presented. Can't wait to see the final cut!

Best Films of the Decade

For those who might be interested in taking a look ..

Director/Screenwriter Michael J. Bassett* is making a list of the best films of the decade, and he thought he'd ask the readers of his blog for some suggestions. If you would like to comment with your own list or comment on the movies already mentioned, you can do so here:

My list of the Best Films of the Decade:
- The Lord of the Rings trilogy
- The Fall
- The Fountain
- Spirited Away
- Pan’s Labyrinth
- 28 Days Later
- Gladiator
- The Departed
- Pitch Black
- Signs
- The Matrix Trilogy

* If you want to know who Michael J. Bassett is you can read his "About" blurb on his blog or on the IMDB listing.. :)

** cross-posted to ctegan.livejournal.com

** edit: What was I thinking? My own list of the best/favorite films of the decade wasn't in my original post so I added my list to this post. My list (which kind of goes on forever - oops!) is posted on Mr. Bassett's blog, but I shortened it for this post. :) Jan. 2, 2010

No More Teddy Rist

Well, it's official. The Philanthropist has been canceled. I knew that already, or suspected anyway, but now there's official confirmation. A DVD of all the episodes will be released so that's something to look forward to.

James Purefoy, who played the lead character Teddy Rist, is currently filming Ironclad, and according to Michael J. Bassett's blog will be on a publicity tour in Europe for the movie Solomon Kane in December. Then there's John Carter of Mars. If The Philanthropist was renewed, he would be somewhat limited in his film roles and promoting the films because he would be contractually obligated to NBC. So, the cancellation is good in this way, I suppose.

Still, I enjoyed the show while it was on.

All the Things I've Yet to Post About

A month has past, and still I haven't posted what I meant to. I'd gone to NY the weekend of March 23 for filming of Passengers of 7D. I meant to post about that, both here and at Beanywood. I will post about it .. at some point.

I've also created a Second Life account and ventured in there a few times after reading about Michelle's adventures at Juiced on Writing. I haven't been there much, but I definitely want to post about what's happened so far. I also have some pictures, including one of me as a glowing blob. I spent the first two or three days in SL as a glowing blob. And then for awhile, after I was finally able to see myself, I discovered I was wearing a box. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of me wearing the box. ;)

Some day soon I'll post about that as well.

Currently I'm watching "A Little Princess," making bookmarks and wondering about getting a table for the yard sale & bake sale at the Day House. I'm also reading up on affiliates and trying to motivate myself to get back to editing my nanonovel. I'm still following the Think Sideways course, and I see so many things I need to rewrite. I have all the edit notes taken, but I want to follow the course in order and realized I skipped some things which require me to go back, do all the excercises. Every time I read through the lessons, I feel hopeful and excited. :)

And, of course, I'm almost at my goal for The Walk for Hunger on May 3 and must start fundraising for AIDS Walk Boston on June 7. :)

#71 on the List

I took a CPR class tonight. It was painless, and I learned a lot. Plus now I'm more confident about trying to help someone in distress. In high school I always felt intimidated by the whole thing and could never remember how many breaths, how many compressions, etc. This time it was good. M. was a great teacher. :)

Now I just have to get on with that nanonovel. I'm sadly behind, but I think I can still do it. I'm motivated by everyone else's progress. Great job, everyone! :D

edited to add:
#21 on the list - There's a new restaurant next to where I worked. I tried a lovely artisan sandwich there called Jardiniere. Very tasty. I also tried one of their Caprese sandwiches, but I've had a Caprese before so that didn't count.
#90 on the list - I watched "Spanglish" over the weekend with Tea Leoni, Adam Sandler, Cloris Leachman and the talented Paz Vega. Good movie. ;)
