Tom Fox
I've been meaning to post this for a week now.
Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) member Tom Fox, along with three of his colleagues - Harmeet Sooden, Jim Loney and Norman Kember, was abducted on November 26, 2005. His body was found on March 10, 2006; he'd been murdered. His teammates are still missing, held hostage by the people who took him, and there's been no word on how they are, as far as I know.

I wanted to make a little list of sites for others to visit, to learn about Tom Fox and about the group he worked with. I wanted to post quickly so anyone who's surfing through or stopping by my site to see what's up with me will see the little collection of links and will hopefully visit them, read through them, and if not, then, in the very least, I hope whoever stops by will take one moment to remember Tom and all the others who've been kidnapped or tortured in Iraq & elsewhere, remember their families and friends. What I ask is that you think about the people. not the governments, not the war. Think about the people living there, dying there, the family & friends left behind. Soldiers, police, peace activists, shopkeepers, taxi drivers, children in the street .. I think many of us tend to forget that each of those people has a face, a family, a story of his or her own. In the news, it all blurs, and everyone on all sides becomes nameless and faceless. It's not done on purpose, but it makes it easier for the rest of us to forget and for some of us (on any & all sides of an issue) to place blame and to hate the others. We're all others. It just depends on what side of the fence you're standing on.

* I just read an email from my friend Sheila*, a former CPTer who knew Tom while she was over in Iraq. She's decided to return to Iraq for a month to help out the CPTeams in Baghdad because of staffing problems and to relieve the current team that's there. Please keep her in your thoughts. Thanks. :)

Music and Ployes
On Friday the 19th I went to see Cristina Branco perform which, of course, inspired me to download some of the songs she sang from Ulysses along with some more songs by Amalia Rodrigues (see also Wikipedia or a host of other sites on the web) and Misia. :) I'd planned on seeing Cyanide Valentine at T.T. the Bear's Place in Central Square (Cambridge) tonight since it'd tick off an item from my 101 in 1001 list. More than that, I'd really like to see Jake perform. :) The timing is wrong though with the train, and I'm too tired to deal with cabs tonight. I didn't budget for a taxi or an overnight stay in town so .. I guess I'll have to wait for next time to see Cyanide Valentine.
I bought a package of ployes from the Bouchard Family Farm (in the supermarket - I didn't actually visit the farm itself) last weekend and am anxious to give it a try. No milk, no eggs, no fat, no cholesterol - just add water! (hee!) I figured since it's a French Acadian thing my uncles would get a kick out of it, too, so I showed it to my sis for her next hiking trip, when it's her turn to cook. She thought it most excellent. : )

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
I watched that last night for the first time. Wow. And .. Wow. That was fantastic!
I've only read "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," but now, I really want to get a hold of the other books if only to read Goblet of Fire for myself. That movie rocked. The stakes have gone up in a major way.
My sis promises me they get better, too. J.K. Rowling's strategy of writing each book so the readers will grow up with Harry Potter is ingenious. What I mean is that each story and the method of telling that story matures with each book, as Harry matures, and as the reader herself matures with each book. It makes perfect sense to do it that way, and wow, it works in this film.
I'll have to rewatch before making any sensical statements. For now .. Wow.

I have a copy of "Neverwhere" signed by Neil Gaiman that I had signed at Worldcon in Boston (Noreascon Four) 2004. I also have two books signed by writer Traci Briery.

Some thoughts on The Sorcerer's Stone
A few weeks ago I finally finished "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by J.K. Rowling, much to my sister's delight. Having only skimmed the book when it first came to the states, I couldn't remember much of what had happened when the I went to see "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" in the theater. I really enjoyed that movie and the sequels I've seen so far (I haven't had the opportunity to see "The Goblet of Fire" yet!), but my sister kept insisting that I read the book. "You have to read the book," she said. "If nothing else, I'll have someone to talk to about it." So I did.
It was much better than when I'd skimmed through it the first time. There's something to be said for actually reading a book and not simply skipping through the pages to get a sense of it. *g* I was expecting to find in the book a lot of extra material that couldn't be in the movie; there's always more information in the book form of a story. I noticed two things (the most). First, I think they did a great job making the book into a movie. Most of the parts that were changed didn't differ greatly from the book; they were more of a summary of what was going on. That said, I have to mention the second thing I noticed. There was a fundamental change in the frequency that one character appeared in the movie as compared to the book. I was really surprised that Neville Longbottom had more of a role in the original story than we were led to believe in the movie. He was present when the students performed their detention in the woods with Hagrid, not Ron. My sister tells me that Neville plays a growing role of importance in the books that follow. I find this very interesting. Just what is the significance of Neville Longbottom? There must be a reason for it. Hm.
Soon I'll be adding the next book to my To-Read list.

Traveling the Silk Road
While surfing the net last night, I found a wonderful site called Riversleigh Manor. It's a collaboration of websites and blogs meant to inspire, and inspire they do. I really enjoyed looking at 2005 The Silk Road Advent Calendar; each numbered day is a link to a "map" of the silk road with creative projects, writings and a little bit of history.
Mentioned (and pictured) often were altered books. They looked really cool, and so I searched online for more on altered books. It turns out there's a whole society of Altered Book Artists, The International Society of Altered Book Artists (ISABA). There's a wonderful site showing how to make mini altered books. More on altered books can be found here. I want to make one now! :)

St. Valentine's Day
My little neice called earlier to wish us a happy Valentine's Day or, more precisely, "Happy Christmas Tree Valentine's Day"! *g*
I actually didn't remember it was Valentine's Day for most of the day except when others reminded me. I've never been involved with anyone on this holiday so I've never really celebrated it. My mom, however, gave me a box of chocolate. :) So yay for chocolate! :D
I thought I'd post a few links on the history of Valentine's Day for anyone who's ever wondered. The History Channel's site has fun trivia facts among other things. Did you know there were 192 million Valentine’s Day cards exchanged annually? Well, according to The History Channel's site, there were.
This site has interesting tidbits, too, including a section on Valentine traditions. For example, in Wales wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. It doesn't say when this was a tradition so it might not be in practice anymore.
AmericanCatholic.org gives a little history as well.
Of course, Wikipedia has a section on St. Valentine's Day, too.

Reason to Blog

Why did you start blogging in the first place?
It happened suddenly. I'd heard about blogging for awhile, and my sister kept telling me how cool it was. I didn't quite understand how it was different than any other website until one of my friends sent me a link to her blog. From there I followed a link to another (mutual) friend's blog (on Live Journal). So I was lurking at some friends' blogs and suddenly the blogging-bug hit me; I wanted a way to share online finds, thoughts that plague me during the day, fun tests & quotes, without bulk-mailing my friends. *g* I started my own blog (this one) and realized that weblogging is a bit addictive. lol Since then I've started other blogs as well. *g*
Somehow the world of web logs fascinates me. I might actually starting video-blogging soon. ;-)

Oscar Nom for Dave Elsey!
Congratulations to Dave Elsey (Farscape alum!) and Nikki Gooley for their joint Achievement in Makeup nomination for “Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith” (20th Century Fox)!
“Crash” (Lions Gate) got a nomination for Best Screenplay (Screenplay by Paul Haggis & Bobby Moresco and Story by Paul Haggis), Film Editing, Directing (Paul Haggis) and Best Picture (Paul Haggis and Cathy Schulman, Producers). I haven't seen this one, but Paul Haggis is the man who brought us "Due South"! *bg* I will forever love Paul Haggis, Paul Gross and Jay Semko in much the same way that I get warm and fuzzy over Chris Carter, David & Gillian, and Mark Snow. Just like I will forever adore David Kemper & Brian Henson, Ben & Claudia, and Guy Gross.
Yay for the Wallace and Gromit nomination! :D
I'm curious to see who ends up winning the Oscar for Visual Effects, too. The competition seems tough in that category:

A Killer Within on Lifetime!
Next week's a treat for Ben Browder and C.T. Howell fans. "A Killer Within," the independent murder mystery film by Brad Keller, comes to Lifetime this Tuesday. This suspense/thriller stars C. Thomas Howell, Sean Young, Ben Browder, Dedee Pfeiffer and Giancarlo Esposito. I'm both a Ben fan (no, really? *g*) and also a fan of independent films (and filmmaking) so this is a cool combo for me. =)

101 in 1001 Days
from 101 in 1001 days.
The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.
The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).
Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

End Date: Friday, October 10, 2008
My 101
1. Get my ears repierced.
2. Publish this list on the web. (posted 1/12/06)
3. Go to the Chinese New Year celebrations in Boston’s Chinatown.

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. Happy New Year!
I wrote for more than an hour in my diary today. I feel semi-accomplished. Before I return to either video editing or playing with my Sims families, I decided to skim the Daily Meme for some posting inspiration and found one I liked.
My first meme of the new year. :)
Don't think of them as Resolutions. Think of them as Goals or even just "Things You'd Like." But list up to seven things you hope to accomplish before 2006 draws to a close.
1. Make a dentist appointment.
2. Start an IRA or another such retirement plan for myself.
3. Get my finances back under control (pre-2004 at least).
4. Finish at least one of my written works in progress.
5. Film. (either on my own or working with someone else)
6. Complete the 2006 NaNoWriMo challenge.
7. Submit one of my finished stories for publication. (hopefully for publication)

Merry Christmas Tree
I think that'll be my new holiday wish/greeting for people. Have a merry Christmas tree. My little niece wished us that this weekend. She was so excited. Christmas trees, lights, people smiling, lots of joy, especially for her. At the annual Christmas eve gathering, she was a hit with all the relatives who hadn't seen her in two years. They commented on how happy and polite she was. *g* When anyone asked, she would say she wanted a Christmas tree from "Santa comin' to town." Sometimes she sang "Jingle Bells" though not to the "guys upstairs." On Christmas day she was given a little kitchen set from her parents and trains, books and a baby doll from us. She also received a vacuum cleaner which she *loved*. She was busy cleaning up the living room most of the day. *bg* We also watched "Polar Express." (more trains! yay! *vbg*)
We learned a very valuable lesson though. Too many gifts equal an overwhelmed child. Also, assemble the toys and put the batteries in *before* you wrap the gifts. You'd think we would've learned this on her birthday, but no. :p
Somewhere in there the meaning was lost, too. My niece had been excited about the day we remember Jesus' birthday (that's how we had all explained Christmas to her), and she was still excited when the day came, but it seemed so rushed, like a blur. I wish we'd taken a little more time to slow it all down for her .. and stressed more quiet moments. She didn't even have a chance to listen to the Christmas record I was playing in the background. I used to love listening to the music on the record .. and the stories. *sigh*
It was a good day but a blur, like I said. Saturday night, I'd gone to bed without heading out to midnight mass. Sunday morning we finished some wrapping, some cleaning, got dressed, and my sister and her family arrived. A blur. A very nice blur .. but a blur.
Gift highlights: (that I received)
- a little photo puzzle with my niece as the picture
- a digital camera
- more Alice
- a faster notebook with more HD space (we transferred all my files, preferences, programs, etc., last night)
- a new Sims game
- a cute hat and scarf, some socks & tights (yes, I like these things! I walk to work so they keep me warm)
- a jewelry box

Mostly Music Musings
We finally put our tree up last night. No, it's not real; it's a fake tree but looks quite nice. The best part is that there are no needles on the floor. Also, it doesn't make me sneeze. :P
My little neice has been saying she wants a Christmas tree whenever someone asks her what she'd like for Christmas. She's easy to please. Give her some crackers, some fruit, maybe a few berries, and my little neice is in heaven.
I'm off to do some Christmas shopping in a bit. I'm actually starting my shopping today. (see my problems with procrastination) Hopefully, I'm not required to do much talking on this trip because my voice is on the verge of leaving me. It left me Friday around 8pm and Saturday around 5pm. I'm hoping I can make it last until 8pm again, at least. *sigh*
There was a Christmas meme on Live Journal that I wanted to do and post here, but I can't find it right now so instead, I'll mention the three bands that are on My Space that you should have a listen to. Cyanide Valentine has a cool MySpace page, including a blog there (and on the main site). I was showing my mom because she adores Jake Z., and I think, after the holidays, I'll pick myself up the "Let It Riot" CD. So far my favorite song is Freaks; I can imagine it in a cool indie film with the lead strutting down the street as his fellow "freaks" posse join him one by one. :P Of course, I haven't listened to all the tracks yet, so there might be another favorite on there, *and* there will be a new album coming out sometime next year, I guess. :)
I also showed my mom The Slackers page on MySpace which I recently discovered. I showed her a pic of G., and she kept asking me if he sang in Portuguese and was amazed & impressed they were wearing suits. *bg* I played the music samples to give her an idea of the style of music. That's another one I want a new CD of. I have "Question" and downloaded the song Have the Time from online (such a cool song), but I want to check out their other stuff as well.
Last but not least, Signal Room has joined MySpace. Check them out here and add them as a friend if you're a MySpace member. They are a great up&coming band out of Australia. I have their latest CD "The Day You Ran Away" and am hoping they'll do another soon. I was lucky enough to attend an accoustic performance in NJ last year (2004); it'd also be nice if they did more shows though, especially stateside, but I suppose that's all costly and time consuming so I doubt I'll get to see them perform live again any time soon.

I don't know what it is about me, but for some reason, people tend to give me coats as gifts. Maybe I look like I'm chilly a lot of the time? I suppose that's possible. It's also winter in New England, and today's weather chilled me to the bone. *brrrrr* I can only imagine how frozen I looked today as I walked to various destinations and back again, but I have to say, for the record and for anyone who might be thinking of getting me another coat, that I'm the type of person who wears a coat until it's worn out. To make matters more complicated for coat-giving friends and family, I already have two long winter coats (one wool) and at least three short coats. I guess one can never have enough coats for the winter, and some people aren't even lucky enough to own one really good winter coat so I can't really complain, and I'm not complaining, just noting this peculiarity out loud.

I hope everyone's day was wonderful. I have so much to be thankful for.

Procrastination Update
A few posts back, I wrote a bit about my procrastination woes of late. I've since ticked a few items off that list.
- I got my hair cut on Friday. It's now skimming the tops of my shoulders. So, it's still long enough for the cold weeks ahead, but it's short enough to feel weightless, which is nice. =) Since I had around two years of growth being chopped off (hehe), I donated my hair to Locks of Love. They make wigs out of donated hair for children who have lost theirs (for example, cancer patients).
- I finished all my con book entries before the deadlines. Yay!
- I burned my music vids on DVD before the Creation Farscape video contest deadline for this year's Burbank convention. I hadn't heard anything though, so I assumed that none of mine were chosen. After all, why would they be when there are so many talented vidders out there already with so many beautiful vids to their names? Creation announced at the con that they received 60 entries and chose 20 of them to show at the convention. Jo notified me over the weekend that one of my vids actually played at the convention! Herdthinner was at the con, saw the vid, and called Jo who then emailed me. :D
Although I'm still trying to figure out why they did pick mine and why that particular one out of the two I submitted, I can't help but be excited and pleased. Anyway, if you want to watch my video, it's online here: Happy Happy Joy Joy.
There's a lot wrong with it and that needs to be redone, but I think it gets the point across regardless, and I hope it's entertaining. Comments and criticism (if it's constructive) are welcome because that's how I learn what to keep, what to do differently, etc., for the next time. ; )

Naming Hurricanes

There are five letters of the alphabet not involved in hurricane names. Apparently, no one wanted to show the love to the letters Q, U, X, Y or Z. Pick one of those five letters and come up with seven names, male and female, that you'd use for hurricanes. (Six names would be required for the current set of six lists, and the seventh name would be a back-up in case one of the first six needs to be retired.)

Procrastination
It's a job that's never started that takes the longest to finish.

Mr. Tolkien had it pegged. No job gets done if you don't start it to begin with. In my experience, putting things off is not the best course, most of the time. I've been plagued by procrastination a lot lately, and it's gotten the better of me, I'm afraid. Among the many projects that have suffered are some videos I've been working on and some writing I wanted to get started on. What Mr. Tolkien failed to mention is that the longer one takes to start a project, the more tired one becomes as deadlines loom. *sigh* I am so tired right now.
I missed the Blogging4Books deadline. I hadn't even written my entry yet, just a few lines scribbled inside my head. Still, it would've been nice to try.
I haven't yet missed the con book deadlines of Nov. 4, but I haven't yet sat down to write a message either. The deadline for Creation's Farscape video contest is Nov. 1, and I've yet to burn my vids (ones I finished awhile back) to DVD. The month is almost half over!
I have yet to schedule my dentist appointment, regular doctor's appointment or my appointment for a hair cut.
Actually, I could make a long list of items on my to-do list which I have yet to tackle. Maybe accomplishing one or two items a day will help me get back into the swing of things? We'll see.

"What is the use of a book", thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations"?
For all the bibliophiles, Lewis Carroll's original handwritten manuscript Alice's Adventures Underground is now available online (as a Flash document) in the British Library's Turning the Pages collection of books. They've got quite an impressive collection of other works as well.

I often toy with the idea of joining something like the Lewis Carroll Society or the Lewis Carroll Society of North America. Many of my friends love Alice as much as I do, but it'd be cool to be a part of one of the above societies. I think I'd learn so much more through them. ;-)
That reminds me! Was anyone else aware that the Libary of Congress has The Lewis Carroll Scrapbook?
Lastly, I stumbled upon The Invisible Library today. That is such a cool concept. Either that or I'm just easily amused. ;p

Reunion To Do
My 15th year high school reunion is coming in two months. So what do I need to do to before then? lol
1. Make sure I contact those that I know won't get the information except from me.
2. Get a hair cut.
3. Buy a new dress.
4. Buy a nice pair of shoes.
5. Visit the dentist.
6. Mentally prepare myself.
7. Add to the list as I think of more things.
Actually, I wasn't thinking of going originally, but some people I haven't seen in awhile are considering it. I'd really like to see them and hang out; we never have much opportunity to get together any more because of our schedules. Plus, it should be fun, I guess.

Pretend Writer: Thursday4
1. If you were a book, What would you be about? Why?
If I were a book, I'd be one of those stories about a dreamer with a quirky family who sometimes feels trapped by her life but breaks out of her cocoon to freedom (in whatever form that means to her) by the end of the book. Why? I feel that particular book would apply to me. ;p
2. If you were a movie, what genre would you be? Why?
I'd either be a quirky comedy romance or a fantasy movie. Why? I think those are the genres I'd prefer to be.
3. If you could open a restaurant, what type of food would you serve? Why?
I would serve comfort foods mostly but also international treats, like fruit-filled crepes or Spanish tapas. I'd serve during breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there would be different desserts available. I'd rotate the menu but keep basic comfort foods available at all times. I'm not sure if I'd serve a seperate brunch menu or afternoon tea menu or not. Why would I serve the types of food that I mentioned? I love to eat at restaurants that offer tasty variety and also a standard fare of home cooking inspired meals.
4. If your life was a movie, what actors/actress would play the main characters in your life? Why?
This is a tough one. I'm not quite sure who would play the main characters in my life as a movie. I'll have to contemplate this last question a bit longer and return to it at a later date.

Alchera Project: Astrological Signs
Although I'm not (yet) a member of the Alchera Project, I enjoy lurking on the site and thought one of this month's writing options was cool. So, I decided to give it a try. Maybe I'll even see if I can join the group, too. Anyway, without further ado ..
List/Option No. Four:
This month is going to deal with astrology. Whether you believe in it or not will be irrelevant as this is more about personalities than lions, scorpions and bulls. eHow.com has a collection of "How to Spot a" articles. Each article points out the most common characteristics of each sign.

Capricorn
Capricorns are symbolized by the Goat, and are born between December 22 and January 19. Those born under this sign struggle with duality and with an innate need to master themselves and those around them.
Much of these characteristics apply to me, imo. I tend to be a bit more serious and practical than many others. I'm very willing to work slowly & quietly behind the scenes for whatever I wish to accomplish, and to patiently wait for what I want as the end result. I don't see myself lusting for power or material possessions more than others, but I definitely enjoy success and praise when it's deserved. I can't really say whether I'm especially lucky (or unlucky), but I'm definitely not a beach, party or club person.

I couldn't find any other sign's characteristics that matched me as well as my sun sign's. I did find a few characteristics here and there that applied.
Watch those who seem to have many unfinished projects in their life. A Gemini feels the need to be involved in a multitude of creative endeavors at all times, and subsequently has trouble finishing projects of any magnitude.
Seek out pack rats. Cancers form emotional bonds with everything that crosses their paths. Often unable to throw anything away, they can frequently be found hoarding such valuable treasures as a pair of gym shorts from junior high.
Notice those who have a strong relationship with their parents and immediate family. A friend who places a high value on familial bonds is likely to have been born under the sign of Cancer.
Cancers love to be within the secure boundaries of their own abode, and can often be found nestled under the covers reading a favorite novel.
Notice those who clearly preach their values and who wholeheartedly attempt to follow their own moral standards at all times. (Sagittarius)

The World Offers Aid
Although the world's reaction to the destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina varies, offers of aid are coming from dozens of countries, over 50 at last count. Some are allies; some aren't. Some are rich; some, poor.
It's amazing; for the second time in only four years, the world has reached out to the U.S., despite ideological or political differences across many nations.
It seems, though, from what I've been reading, that maybe not everyone in our government is openly welcoming & accepting not only the monetary aid that has been offered but all the promises of rescue teams & equipment, medical assistance, etc. For example, the following two quotes, if accurate, seem to illustrate a willingness to help by others but a lack of willingness to accept the help offered. Maybe I'm misreading?
I'm hoping that I'm just misinterpreting quotes like that. Honestly, I don't want to bring politics into the rescue/recovery efforts in the states affected by Hurricane Katrina. Yet, when help is offered but is slow to be accepted, I can't help but think of politics, or worse, someone's ego about taking care of business all by his lonesome. Well, like I said, it's probably misinterpretation on my part or simply frustration. We are each doing what we can do, no matter how small or how great the effort. Comfort, supplies, monetary aid, whatever, as long as everyone is doing something, the people are evacuated and those who need medical treatment receive it, that's all that should matter right now. After all is said and done, that's when people should focus on preperations for such a major disaster next time. Now is the time, imho, to focus on getting to the people who are trapped there and on the "refugees" who've lost everything.
Help and Hope are on the way though. :) I'm guessing we'll be hearing a lot of survivor's stories over the next few weeks, or at least, I hope we do. Katrina hit not only New Orleans but other areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama (after taking a swipe at Florida). That's a large area of devastation needing help now.

Oh, and I saw War of the Worlds yesterday with my friend S. I loved this movie. When I returned home, I popped in the DVD of the original for comparison, and then watched Signs because I wanted to keep on the same theme. I think the newer version is a wonderful tribute to the original film as well as succeeding as a fantastic film in its own right. I could say a lot about it, but I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen this new Spielberg film or the original version (and there are those out there who haven't seen the original). ;)
Now if only Peter Jackson can do with King Kong what Spielberg accomplished with War of the Worlds, I'll be an even happier (and quite impressed) woman. :)

Okay, I've done as you suggested, M. I've taken out the more recent post (with the photo-letters) that was made after the problem started. ;P Somehow, it's not helping, but I don't wish to delete the rest of the posts either so .. guess I'll try something else.
Oh, I also tried resizing the elephant and camel pics from the festival post, but that didn't seem to affect anything. So, I've returned the elephant and camel to their original sizes. ;)
This happened once before (or something similar to it anyway), and I removed a banner from the page; everything seemed fine after that. So I guess I'll take a look at various jpegs to see if any are the offending pic. It's funny how something will work for months just fine, then one day, bam!, it's all messed up.

Because I Like My Play List on Random
I've done a similar meme, posting favorite lines from random songs and having people guess. Feel free to guess (or not) at this one, too, or take a look at the one on my live journal and venture a guess over there. :) I skipped any songs that came up in my playlist more than once and any songs' lyrics that I'd listed on live journal already. :)

Fathers and Photos from a Festival
Happy Father's Day to all the dads! I hope your day is relaxing and fun. :)
I wish I could've gone in town to visit with my dad today, but he didn't call back yesterday so I couldn't ask him (although I already know his answer - "I'm working"). Still, it would've been nice to go in for the day, have lunch and hang out. I haven't done that with my dad in several years, and I haven't seen him since Christmas .. or maybe it was two Christmases ago, before my grandmother (his mother) died. I'm surprised, too, that he hasn't called today yet since he wasn't able to reach me yesterday. If only I could get out at a regular, predictable time from work, we wouldn't have to play phone tag every weekend. *sigh*
Anyway, my other reason for this post (besides wishing a good day to fathers everywhere) is to share some of my pictures from the Irish Connections Festival on June 11.

Time Wasters
defined by me as an activity which takes up a lot of time & doesn't always accomplish something concrete (and that's a good thing sometimes *g*) .. in no particular order ..
Top 10 Time Wasters of the Modern World
1. Surfing the internet
2. Blogging
3. Those automated phone answering things where you press a number to get connected to the appropriate person or department and instead end up lost in the automated system traveling in circles, hitting "0" for "Operator" and being told it was an invalid selection
4. Traffic jams
5. Video games
6. Television
7. Sales calls
8. Waiting rooms at a doctor's office
9. The local bar/pub
10. Daydreaming
Notice I defined it as not always a bad thing. Sometimes you need to participate in a time wasting activity in order to relax and de-stress. Some time wasters actually do accomplish things (though the results aren't always concrete & visible to others). Other time wasters just eat up at precious moments and annoy me, er, people in general.

Film Notes
* I'm thinking of going to the screening at the Boston Public Library this Saturday June 4th (sponsored by the Newbury Film Series). :) Cost is $35 per person (or $20 for filmmakers/students), and tickets are sold online only (so none are available at the door). The screening will benefit their new youth filmmaking program: Reel Vision. Doors open at 7pm. Screenings and Q&A start 7:30pm, and there's a reception after, with music and a cash bar, at 9pm. To purchase a ticket, go here. To see the films screening that night, go here.
* Boston Filmmakers' Expo returns June 9. It's fairly inexpensive ($30 until June 6 or $35 at the door), but I'd have to take the day off to go. I need to check with on this one. ;-) There are some interesting panels being offered. If the panel descriptions are accurate, I think I can learn a lot.
*I'm spreading around the link to Vendetta: A Christmas Story because I find it amusing. :) Reverend, if you're reading this, I'd love to watch more of your collaborations. (Hi to Sean!)

Weekend Fun
I suppose everyone has big plans this weekend. Personally, I'm going to relax and try to get a few things accomplished .. starting tomorrow. Today, after work, I'm heading to a Viewing Party at maramcc's (I *finally* understand where the handle comes from! lol) with atomicpagan so that'll be the start of the fun weekend. Last weekend, I hung out with LJers L., solonia and Irvin (among others). Maybe May should be renamed Month of LJ, or better yet, Gathering of Friends since I've also seen L.L., G.P. and heard from Jo (fey-fey). :D
In keeping with that line of thought, I figured I'd give Glen a little plug. If you're in the Pittsburgh, PA area tonight and like ska, check out The Slackers at The Brew House. For the New Yorkers, there's a show tomorrow (the 29th) at The Bowery Ballroom.
If any LJers go (and if you know my real name), please be sure to tell Glen I say Hi and give him a big hug from me. :) You can also mention that D.F. (same first name as mine - different last initial) had a baby girl last week. ;)
Wow! I still have almost a half hour left before I've got to leave for work. I feel like I have so much free time right now. I'm not rushed nor late this morning! (not yet anyway) Woohoo! :D

Movie Meme

Well, Solonia suggested I take up the mantle next, so I guess it's my turn. =)
1. Total number of films I own...
Like l_squaredd and Solonia, I have too many films (on VHS & on DVD) to count. I started counting what's in our collection and decided to give up at 313 because I don't feel like fishing through boxes. lol So, to quote Solonia, "over a hundred, under a thousand." ;-)
2. The last film I bought...
I'm not sure. I think it was Jim Henson's The Storyteller for my youger sister.
3. The last film watched at home...
Sunday I watched Earthsea and then Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
4. Five films I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me...
Wow, this is difficult. I'm not sure how to narrow this down to five. lol I guess I'll choose ones that have meaning (for whatever reason) and that I can watch a lot (not necessarily that I do watch them a lot).
I. Shall We Dance (1937). Fred and Ginger are wonderful together, and the character of Cecil Flintridge is hilarious. The scene where Cecil calls from the police station makes me laugh every time I watch it. The jazzy tap dancing in Central Park on roller skates is brilliant. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to ... Watching all the old Astaire and Rogers movies (along with Shirley Temple when I was but a wee one) made me desperately want to take up tap dance. :P
II. The Pink Panther. Fantastic Blake Edwards film that introduces the world to the bumbling Inspector Closeau, played by the talented Peter Sellers. My family always loved watching the Pink Panther movies together. No matter how many times we watched them, my mother laughed out loud as if seeing it for the first time; her laughter is contagious & soon we'd all be wiping tears from our eyes from the experience. *vbg*
movie with similar feeling: Monty Python and the Holy Grail
III. Signs. My reasons for including Signs are similar to Solonia's reasons for choosing The Sixth Sense. I'll start by saying M. Night Shyamalan rocks. *g* I'd love to make the kind of films that he makes. The movie attracted a wide audience, including those who wanted to solve the mystery of what the movie was really about and those who recognized that crop circles = aliens. ;-) I know a few people who went to see this, who usually avoid anything to do with science fiction, and enjoyed it. There's also another reason I chose Signs (which, imho, is a very spiritual film) - what to me is the underlying theme: Everything happens for a reason, even if we can't see it at the time. Everything is connected. In many ways it reminded me of one of my favorite X-Files episodes, "All Things," written by series star Gillian Anderson.
movies with similar feeling: Dragonfly, The Mothmen Prophecies, The Five People You Meet in Heaven, What Dreams May Come
IV. Star Wars (original trilogy). Star Wars is the first movie I remember seeing in the theater. It's also the first movie where I saw a female character who was as smart and as tough as the guys. It made me want to create something that would move others to feel what I did when I first watched it, something that people would lose themselves in. At the time (keep in mind, I was in kindergarten *g*) Star Wars was action-packed, funny, imaginative, intelligent, visually exciting. The release of the next two movies was an event itself. I so wanted to be a Jedi. *g* I hear the theme song, and I'm immediately transported to the Rebel Alliance.

V. The Fifth Element. Bizarre, touching and filled with great performances, the more I see this movie, the more I like it. =)
Yellow Submarine. Okay, so I'm cheating and including a sixth choice. :P The Beatles, Blue Meanies, Pepperland, singing, psychadelic cartoon strangeness ... what's not to love? :D
5. Which five people are you passing the baton onto and why?
Anyone who wants to give it a go. :)
